New Garage Door Options

Garage doors are available in a variety of styles, materials including steel and wood, and with options like insulation, windows, wood or composite overlays, and decorative hardware. All of these features will increase the price of a garage door.

In this post we’ll give you all of the details about materials, features, and prices for new, or replacement, garage doors. All of the costs are based on a sectional, single-car door. The cost for a 2-car sectional garage door is typically a little less than double the cost for a single car garage door.

How Much to Replace a Garage Door?

The cost to replace a garage door will essentially be the same as the cost to purchase a new garage door and have it installed. The contractor might charge $100 – $250 to remove and dispose of the old door.

If you replace a garage door with a very similar door you may be able to keep your old garage door opener. Some garage door tracks are adjustable and may work with a replacement door, but it’s not recommended.

Steel Garage Door Price

Steel garage doors can be very affordable, for instance, a basic steel door will cost about $500 to $900. A steel door in this price range is typically constructed with a single layer of 25- or 26-gauge steel that has been stamped into raised or recessed panels and finished in a standard color. A good example is Wayne Dalton’s Classic Style 9100 steel door.

Once you add insulation and other features the cost will increase. Depending on the type and amount, insulation can double or triple the price, and standard windows can add $500 or more.

At the $4,000 plus price point you’ll find doors with an interior and an exterior layer of steel and a layer of polyurethane insulation in between the steel layers providing an R-Value of a 10 or more. The door will have windows, decorative hardware and a custom finish.

Steel and Composite Garage Door Price

Steel and composite garage doors are typically in the high price range and cost between $2,500 and $6,500.

The composite material is often molded from actual pieces of wood producing a wood-grain texture, finished in wood-tones, and applied to the exterior of the door in one or two layers creating the appearance of wood cladding and rails and stiles.

An non-insulated steel door with one layer of composite will cost about $2,500. The cost of a 4 layer (2 layers of steel, one layer of insulation, and one layer of composite) will cost $3,800 and up.

The cost of a steel and composite garage door with 2 layers or composite, making it a 5-layer door, windows, insulation with an R-Value of 12 or above, and a custom finish can cost $6,000 and above.

Clopay’s Canyon Ridge Collection are all multi-layer, insulated, steel garage doors, featuring one or two layers of composite overlay, and windows and cost between $3,500 and $6,500.

Wood Garage Door Price

Wood garage doors start as low as $1,000 but the door won’t include insulation or windows and the style will be basic. You may need to stain or paint the door yourself.

Carriage House wayne dalton wood

A contemporary or modern style wood, single-car garage door with insulation, and windows will cost between $1,500 and $2,500. The price of a multi-layer, insulated, wood door, in a carriage house style, with windows and decorative hardware, can easily reach $6,000 or above.

If you want something really unique, you can opt for a custom wood door that you design yourself, from the door style to the number of layers, windows, and hardware. Custom wood garage doors start around $3,500 and go up from there.

Amarr offers insulated, custom garage doors in various wood choices starting around $4,500 in their Amarr by Design profile.

Aluminum Garage Door Price

Aluminum garage doors offer some unique benefits. They are versatile from a design perspective, they are lightweight, and they don’t rust in coastal climates where salt air can corrode steel.

Hormann Aluminum Garage Doors

Standard panel-style aluminum garage doors are priced from about $1,000 to $3,500. At the $1,000 price point, the door will be fairly basic, without windows and insulation, although aluminum garage doors aren’t usually insulated. Adding windows can increase the cost of an aluminum door by $500 to $1,000.

In the higher price range, you can choose from a variety of aluminum garage door styles, add windows, and a custom paint color. The Raynor Garage Door Style View Collection features aluminum garage doors that cost from about $1,500 to $3,000 that are available in a variety of architectural styles.

Aluminum and Glass Garage Door Price

These doors tend to be very modern or contemporary and are known as “full view” garage doors because they are constructed of an aluminum frame with large glass panels placed into the frame. The cost for full view aluminum and glass garage doors starts at $3,500 and can exceed $8,000.

The factors that increase the cost for these doors include the exterior finish, adding insulation to the frame, the number of glass panels used in the frame, and the type of glass used. Tinted, frosted, mirrored, thermal, or tempered glass will all add to the cost.

Clopay’s Avante and Amarr’s Horizon are examples of this style of garage door.

Fiberglass Garage Door Price

The cost for a basic fiberglass garage door is right around $1,000 – $1,200. Just like with doors in other materials, adding windows, insulation, and special finishes will increase the cost to $2,500 to $3,500.

Fiberglass Garage Door

One of the benefits of fiberglass is that it can be molded and is often molded with a woodgrain then a finish is applied to create a door that imitates the look of real wood. Fiberglass doors usually include a fiberglass exterior on a steel frame.

The Impression Fiberglass Collection by Overhead Door is a good example of this type of garage door.

Vinyl Garage Door Price

Vinyl garage door prices start around $800 for a single car garage door. Insulation will add $800 plus to the cost, depending on the type and thickness, windows can add $500 or more.

Vinyl Garage Doors

A mid-range cost for a vinyl door is about $2,300 to $2,500 and will include steel channels running the length of each vinyl panel for strength, plus windows and insulation.

Vinyl doors are often used in coastal areas because they don’t rust. They are also considered to be dent-resistant. Vinyl garage doors in the upper price category of $3,000 – $4,000, may include structural reinforcements for coastal, high-wind regions.

Wayne Dalton’s Specialty Vinyl garage door includes 3-layer construction, foamed-in polyurethane insulation providing an 11.75 R-Value, door panel, window, glass, and color choices, and costs between $2,800 and $4,500 depending on the options selected.

Factors That Increase Garage Door Prices

Size

Garage doors are available in many sizes, from standard single-car sizes of 8, 9, or 10 feet wide by 7 or 8 feet tall, to 20 feet wide by 16, or more, feet tall, and of course, the larger the size the more it will cost. A two-car garage door is just less than double the cost of a single-car garage door.

Material

The material that the door is made from can make a big difference in cost. As you can see from the above chart, steel can be the most economical, with aluminum and glass, or a custom wood door as the most expensive.

Multi-Layer Construction

Garage doors are constructed in layers. A one-layer door will only have a single layer of material. A two-layer door will include the primary exterior layer and a layer of insulation, and a three-layer garage door will have the exterior layer, the insulation, and an interior layer. The interior layer of a wood door is usually also wood but the interior layer with other materials is typically steel.

When a garage door is constructed with 4 or 5 layers, these layers are overlays, either actual wood or a composite material. The more layers the door includes, the more it will cost.

Insulation

An insulated garage door will cost between $500 and $2,500 more than a non-insulated door but it depends on the type and thickness of the insulation. The most common types of insulation are polystyrene and polyurethane.

Polystyrene is a solid foam that is most often used with 2-layer doors and is attached to the interior of the door and backed with vinyl. Polystyrene insulation is about 1 3/8” thick and will provide around a 6 to 7 R-Value.

Polyurethane Foam For Insulation of Garage Doors

Polyurethane insulation is a foam and used with doors that have both an interior and exterior layer. The polyurethane is piped between the door layers, at a thickness of either 1 3/8 or 2”, where it fills all of the cavities and hardens. Polyurethane insulation will provide a 15 to 20 R-value.

In general, the higher the R-Value the insulation provides, the higher the cost.

Windows/Glass

garage door window

The cost to add windows with standard, clear glass to a garage door can cost as little as $300 to $500 but depending on the style of the window and the glass used, the price can increase significantly.  Some windows include muntins which create a variety of styles or ornate grilles that look like wrought iron.

The type of glass used in the windows can increase the cost, especially in full-view garage doors. Plain clear glass is the least expensive with frosted, tinted, or patterned glass in the middle price range. Thermal, tempered, and mirrored glass are the costliest.

Style

The style of the garage door can also affect the cost. A basic, stamped, steel door in a traditional style will cost less than a more elaborate steel carriage house garage door. Contemporary style doors tend to cost more than traditional style doors.

Finishes

A custom powder-coated paint or special finish will increase the cost of a garage door by at least $500. Most manufacturers feature custom paint finishes. For instance, many manufacturers of full-view doors offer anodized, corrosion-resistant finishes. C.H.I. Overhead Door offers Accent Wood Tones which is an applied finish with a non-repeating, wood-grain effect, that mimics the color and warmth of real wood.
