Materials – Steel, Aluminum, Wood and Composite
Amarr and Clopay both make garage doors in steel, aluminum, and wood. Amarr offers one door and Clopay manufactures several doors with an exterior layer of faux wood composite which has been molded with actual wood grain textures.
Advantage: Clopay
Styles
The brands produce garage doors in traditional, carriage house, modern, and wood styles. Clopay also makes a door in a coastal style with the look of plantation shutters.
Advantage: Clopay
Door Layers
Amarr and Clopay construct their garage doors in layers. A door described as being 1-layer means that the door is not insulated and includes only a single material, like steel or wood. A 2-layer door typically includes the door material plus a layer of insulation which is backed by a material like vinyl. A 3-layer door includes the door material, a layer of insulation, and a layer of the same material as the exterior, such as steel, which covers the insulation.
4 and 5-layer doors will include the above 3 layers plus overlay materials, usually a faux wood composite overlay on a 4-layer door with an additional composite cladding on a 5-layer door.
Advantage: Even
Insulation
Both Amarr and Clopay provide insulation options on many of their doors. The options include a choice of either polystyrene or polyurethane at a thickness of 1-3/8” or 2”. Clopay notes that they use proprietary polyurethane foam that is injected into the door expanding to fill the entire interior providing strength and a better insulated door, but it also increases costs.
Advantage: Clopay
Mosaic Windows
Amarr offers an interesting window design feature on a number of their doors. The Mosaic Windows option allows you to place windows in unconventional positions on the door. For instance, you can choose to stack 4 long, narrow windows down one, or both, sides of the door, or place four windows centered in the middle of the door.
Advantage: Amarr
Garage Door Colors
Amarr offers many standard colors including white, almond, brown, and black, plus more than 800 Sherwin-Williams colors through their Color Zone option. Color Zone is available on all steel doors and allows homeowners to match the garage door to exterior features on their home like shutters and front doors.
Clopay also gives you a number of standard color choices including white, sandstone, bronze, brown, green, and gray, plus a custom color option, Color Blast which also uses Sherwin-Williams paint colors and is available on most of their steel doors.
Advantage: Amarr
Ultra-Grain Wood-Look Paint Finish
Clopay’s Ultra-Grain finish is a durable paint finish that creates a natural-looking wood grain on the door. It’s specifically designed for steel doors where the appearance of stained wood is desired, but with the low maintenance of steel.
Colors include Walnut and Cherry in dark and medium tones. Window frames, grilles, and inserts are all color matched to coordinate with the Ultra-Grain finish. Amarr doesn’t produce anything quite like this.
Advantage: Clopay
Amarr vs Clopay Garage Door Costs
