Garage Door Guides helps homeowners work out what’s wrong with their garage door, whether it’s safe to check themselves, and what a fair repair or replacement should cost.
We started the site because garage door problems tend to arrive at the worst moment, with a car stuck inside, a door hanging crooked, or a quote that seems far too high. Most of the answers are simple once someone explains them plainly. That’s what we try to do.
What we cover
- Repairs: what each common problem means, what’s safe to check and what to leave alone. Start with our problem solver.
- Prices: realistic 2026 ranges for repairs, new doors and openers, in our garage door price guide
- Buying guides: materials, insulation, openers and wind-rated doors
- Safety: springs, cables, sensors and the emergency release
Who writes our guides
Ben Johnson, editor. Ben has researched and published home-improvement guides since 2006, covering window and garage door replacement, repairs and pricing. He writes and updates the guides on this site, checks every price range against national cost data, and makes sure each repair page carries clear safety advice.
How we check our advice
- Safety first. Any page that touches springs, cables or wiring says clearly what not to do yourself, in line with U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission guidance and the UL 325 safety standard for openers.
- Prices from more than one source. We compare published national cost data (HomeAdvisor, Angi, This Old House, Fixr and Housecall Pro) and publish a range where they broadly agree. We don’t make up averages.
- Sources linked. Each guide lists the references we used.
- Regular reviews. We review prices every six months and update pages when codes, programs or prices change.
What we don’t do
We don’t install or repair garage doors, and we’re not affiliated with any manufacturer. When you ask for a quote, we pass your request to a lead partner who connects you with local companies. See how we make money.
