Material Options – Steel, Aluminum and Wood Garage Doors
Amarr makes garage doors in steel, aluminum, and wood. Amarr’s aluminum doors provide a modern architectural style.
Raynor makes mostly steel doors with one profile in aluminum. The aluminum door is available in several door designs allowing you to create a traditional, carriage house, or modern style garage door.
Two of Raynor’s premium steel profiles include a composite overlay as do several of Amarr’s. The overlay is applied to the exterior of the door creating an authentic wood appearance.

Available Door Styles
Raynor and Amarr make garage doors in Traditional, Carriage House, and Modern styles.
Available Door Layers
Amarr and Raynor manufacture their doors in layers. A 1-layer door includes only a single layer of material such as steel or aluminum and is not insulated. A 2-layer door will include the exterior layer, like steel, plus a layer of insulation. A door described as 3-layer includes the exterior material like steel, aluminum, or wood, a layer of insulation, and an internal layer which is usually steel on a steel-front door and wood on a wood-front door.
Doors that feature 4 or 5 layers are 3-layer doors with a wood, or faux wood composite cladding and, or overlay which make up the 4th and 5th layers.
Raynor makes one steel 4-layer door with overlay and one 5-layer steel door with both cladding and overlay. Amarr makes one 4-layer steel door with overlay.
Insulation Options
Amarr and Raynor both use polystyrene and polyurethane insulation, and in some cases, you can choose which insulation you prefer as well as the thickness of the insulation. Polystyrene is a solid insulation which is bonded to the inside of the exterior door and typically includes a vinyl backing. Polystyrene is the only insulation available with 2-layer doors.
Polyurethane is a foam that is injected into the space between the exterior and interior materials, most often steel, filling 100% of the space, and creating 3-layers doors. Because the polyurethane foam can fill the space better, it is a slightly better insulator than polystyrene, and you’ll typically find it used in the more high-end doors.
Door Styles and Window Designs from Raynor & Amarr
Both Amarr and Raynor have a wide variety of door and window designs with each profile allowing you to personalize the door and compliment the architectural style of your home.
For instance, the Eden Coast steel door profile by Raynor sells several door design choices but also allows you to create a custom door design, which is unusual with a steel door. Amarr’s only custom door option is with their Amarr by Design wood door profile, but with many of their profiles, they produce such a wide variety of door design options, that you’ll easily find one that suits your style.
Both manufacturers also give you a range of window options, including plain, windows with muntins, and windows with decorative grilles. Amarr offers a feature called Mosaic windows on some of their doors which allows you to place windows in various positions on the door.
You can also choose a similar feature on the Raynor Aspen 200 Series called VersaView allowing you to personalize the door by placing long or short windows in a variety of configurations on the door.
The Aspen LuxeView includes oversized windows, and the Aspen Contempora features long, narrow windows placed vertically down the side of the door. Raynor, offers a slightly larger selection in comparison to Amarr.
Garage Door Colors and Finishes
Amarr doors are available in many standard colors, including wood-grain finishes. Most of Amarr’s doors are available with their custom color feature, Color Zone. Color Zone is a multi-step process allowing you to match your garage door to exterior features on your home like shutters and trim and includes over 800 Sherwin-Williams paint colors.
Raynor also offers a variety of standard colors or choose a wood-look finish with their Distinct Finish Woodtones. Raynor’s custom paint feature is called ColorWave. ColorWave is available with most garage door profiles and allows you to choose from over 1,500 Sherwin-Williams enamel garage door paint colors.
Wind Load Doors
Both brands manufacture a wind load option on almost all of their garage doors which reinforces doors making them able to withstand high wind pressure. Amarr’s option is called WindPro and Raynor’s option is called HurricaneReady.
Amarr vs Raynor Garage Door Costs
All of the prices quoted are based on a single, standard, garage door.
The prices for Amarr range from about $850 for an affordable steel door to over $5,000 for a multi-layer, steel and composite door, and up to $8,500 for their custom wood doors.
Raynor prices start at about $550 for a non-insulated steel door, to about $3,000 for a custom aluminum door, and up to $5,000 for a their 5-layer steel door with composite cladding and overlay.
